With veganism firmly on the rise in the UK, I thought it was about time I share my favourite places offering vegan options in Peterborough. I often share my take on vegan restaurants when I’m abroad (Warsaw, Prague and Italy are winners in my book) so why not write about the options on offer in my hometown too?
Eating vegan has become somewhat of a trend in the UK over the last year or so. I’m not sure of the reasons that others decide to go vegan – maybe it’s to reduce their carbon footprint, or for the compassion of animals, or just to be more healthy (or perhaps, like me, it’s all of those reasons.)
It’s 2019 and it’s cool to eat plants. Orders of vegan meals grew 388% between 2016 and 2018 [Source] and the number of vegans in the UK quadrupled between 2014 and 2018 [Source]. That’s AMAZING! It’s no doubt that the vegan movement is growing and I, for one, hope veganism stays fashionable.
Unfortunately we fall a bit short in terms of exclusively vegan restaurants in Peterborough, but there are still so many places with vegan options on the menu. To make this post a bit easier to create (and read), I’ve split it into three sections: exclusively vegan restaurants, restaurants with a separate vegan menu, and restaurants which have vegan options available.
Please note that menus are always changing. This post is accurate as at 26.09.2019.
Exclusively Vegan Restaurants in Peterborough City Centre
Although we don’t have a huge amount of exclusively vegan restaurants in Peterborough, the movement is definitely growing! If you know of any others, please get in touch; they deserve to be featured here (and I want to try them out of course!)
When Polly Met Fergie
Peterborough’s ONLY exclusively vegan restaurant has cooked up a storm since it opened in September 2018. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, WPMF is a great place to eat any time of day, and there’s a jazz bar upstairs in the later hours. With dishes like an Eggless Benedict and Southern Fried Seitan on the menu, WPMF offers exciting choices for those on a plant-based diet.
Menu | Address: Unit 16 Westgate Arcade, Queensgate, Peterborough PE1 1PY
Resist! Vegan Kitchen
Resist!’s filly vegan menu features burgers, wraps and kebabs, as well as ‘ribs’ and ‘wings’. Chef Gareth makes every patty from scratch and you can tell – they are just THAT good. This pop-up started in local pubs and at events, and is on a journey to finding its forever-home. It recently moved from its location at the Key Theatre to the Broadway Theatre, but at the time of writing, Resist doesn’t have a permanent location. I’ll update with more info as soon as it’s available.
Menu | Address: TBC (no current lease)

Vegan Menus | Vegan Friendly Restaurants in Peterborough City Centre
Pizza Parlour
Amazing pizzas and independently owned too. It’s great to try a traditional Italian restaurant rather than a chain, and Pizza Parlour offers amazing food at a really decent price. Their vegan menu isn’t hugely extensive but it’s the quality you go for in this place.
Menu | Address: 5 Cowgate, Peterborough, PE1 1LR
Pizza Express
Whilst it’s a chain, the great thing about Pizza Express is they replicate pretty much every cheese in a vegan version so you don’t feel you’re missing out! The Padana and Giardiniera are my favourites – plus their famous doughballs are vegan too!
Menu | Address: 8 Cathedral Square, Peterborough, PE1 1XH
The Argo Lounge
The Argo Lounge was one of the only places that had noticeable vegan options available when I first went vegan 3 years ago. Featuring an amazing all-day brunch option, the vegan breakfast (ask for extra beans) is one of my favourites, although the have swapped the veggie sausages for some rather disappointing bacon which is a shame. There’s also a heap of falafel, salad, and sandwich options, plus a Moving Mountains hot-dog and a Beyond burger. The Argo Lounge shares its menu with the Cosy Club in Stamford.
Menu | Address: 7 Bridge Street, Peterborough, PE1 1HJ
Wagamama
Another chain, but Wagamama has been a firm favourite of mine since the Leamington Spa branch opened when I was at uni. The vegatsu is good, but the soups are my preferred option at this popular Japanese restaurant. The mushroom buns to start are very good too.
Menu | Address: 37-39 Long Causeway, Peterborough PE1 1YJ

Vegan Options | Vegan Friendly Restaurants in Peterborough City Centre
There’s at least one vegan option on pretty much every menu in Peterborough now, but I thought I would note some of my favourites here. It’s great to be able to go out with meat-eater friends and know you have some good choices on the menu – that way, everyone’s happy!
Handmade Burger Co
Yes, it’s a chain – but Handmade Burger in my opinion create some of the best burgers I’ve ever had! There are five vegan burgers on the menu (all approved by the Vegan Society), plus other vegan possibility options too. Rosemary chips on the side make it. The restaurant itself is in the Old Still, which used to be a bar where my Mum and Dad would go out when they were younger – it’s a beautiful building with a lot of history.
Menu | Address: The Old Still, Westgate, Peterborough PE1 1PY
East
The novelty of a restaurant on a boat has still not worn off for me – I’ve eaten at East at least five times and only ever had the Kung Pao Tofu – it’s that good. This asian inspired restaurant has lots of options available. Items aren’t marked vegan – only vegetarian – but the waiters are more than happy to help talk you through vegan possibilities. They also do takeaway!
Menu | Address: Upper Deck, Charters, Town Bridge, London Road Peterborough PE1 1FP
The Brewery Tap
Run by the same group as East, The Brewery Tap’s Thai menu features curries, soups, noodle and rice dishes. Again, dishes aren’t marked vegan but staff are happy to guide you through the options.
Menu | Address: 80 Westgate, Peterborough PE1 2AA
Turtle Bay
Caribbean food comes in no other shape or form than the ever-growing Turtle Bay franchise. There’s tofu, a burger, and many more vegetable-based dishes on the menu. The aubergine curry is just divine. I also love that they label their cocktails vegan here – but I don’t love that they continue giving out plastic straws with them…
Menu | Address: 46 Queensgate Shopping Centre, Westgate, Peterborough, PE1 1NH
Prévost
I can’t forget Peterborough’s fine dining restaurant tucked away in Priestgate. You can have up to nine courses of beautifully crafted, delicious food in the former Clarke’s restaurant, which has a Michelin star. Vegan options are available upon request; the menu below shows vegetarian.
Menu | Address: 20 Priestgate, Peterborough, PE1 1JA

Vegan Options and Menus Around Peterborough
I’m so pleased that you don’t have to go right into the city to find a decent vegan meal – menus are popping up left, right and centre, at pubs and other restaurants on the outskirts of the city too. Here are some favourites.
Ramblewood Inn
There’s a few marked vegan options on Ramblewood’s menu. I’ve tried both the jackfruit tacos and the hoisin pancakes and would recommend. However at almost £13 a dish this is a little pricier option.
Menu | Address: The Village, Peterborough PE2 7DN
Fox and Hounds
Situated in Longthorpe, the Fox and Hounds is another friendly pub restaurant with quality food at low prices. There’s a separate vegan menu and I’ve tried three of the four vegan mains – the pie is my favourite. As it’s part of the Chef & Brewer group, its menu is the same as the Boathouse, below.
Menu | Address: Thorpe Road, Longthorpe, Peterborough, PE3 6NB
Boathouse
Just as lovely as the above, and sharing the same menu. The Boathouse is on the lake – a lovely spot in summer and if you fancy a walk.
Menu | Address: Thorpe Meadows, Peterborough, PE3 6GA
Apple Cart
With its Two-for-One deal across all mains, the Apple Cart is a good budget-friendly option. Run by Marsten’s Group, the Apple Cart shares its menu with other establishments across the country. Their exclusively vegan menu was released earlier this year and features a curry, burgers, and a pie (which bizarrely comes without gravy). Starters and sides are decent too. They also do a fun pub quiz on Wednesdays.
Menu | Address: Bellona Drive, Cardea, Peterborough, PE2 8GP
Maharani’s
This Indian restaurant has two locations in the city, one in Deeping St James and one in Hampton – menus and proces differ slightly in each restaurant. There are no vegan labelled dishes on the menu, but they’re able to make pretty much any curry with coconut milk instead of ghee/butter/cream and are happy to cater to any dietary requirement. The chana masala is my favourite. They offer a special on Wednesday and Sundays.
Market Deeping Menu | Address: 23 Bridge St, Deeping St. James, Peterborough, PE6 8HA
Hampton Menu | Address: 56 Hargate Way, Hampton Hargate, Peterborough, PE7 8DS
Harvester
With two locations in the city, the Harvester is another budget-friendly option that suits all dietary requirements. The menus at the two are the same; vegan options are clearly marked. They’ve got a Beyond and Moving Mountains burger on the menu, plus a great tagine dish and tofu skewers. They do unlimited salad bowls too. It’s budget but it’s bloody good.
Harvester Pavilions Menu | Address: Unit 4 Pavilions West, Cygnet Park, Peterborough, PE7 8FD
Harvester Alwalton Menu | Address: East of England Way, Orton Northgate, Peterborough, PE2 6HE
Banjaraa
Ajay runs his food truck at a number of events across the region. His Indian-inspired wraps are incredible; so much flavour! He can make vegan options based on what’s on the menu, so keep an eye out for him through the event season!
Menu | Address: Events across the region; permanent location TBC
The Cuckoo
Part of the Vintage Inns group, the Cuckoo is another comfortable pub setting with a special Sunday menu. The Cuckoo’s vegan menu features a tart, chickpea burger, coconut curry, and tagliatelle, with exciting starters such as a pasty and falafel. They also have three vegan dessert options which makes a nice change!
Menu | Address: 20 Oundle Road, Alwalton, Peterborough PE7 3UP
The Fitzwilliam Arms (Green Man)
Also part of the Vintage Inns group, the Green Man (as its known locally) offers the same menu as the Cuckoo.
Menu | Address: Stamford Road, Marholm, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, PE6 7HX
The Bell Inn
One of my long-term favourites, the Bell Inn in Stilton has a separate vegan menu (which is often kept behind the bar – so ask if you don’t see it) and the food is top quality. The tagliatelle is my favourite dish. The restaurant is beautiful but you’ll be just as comfortable in the bar area. They also offer accommodation.
Menu | Address: Great North Road, Stilton, Peterborough PE7 3RA
The Cosy Club
The Cosy Club in Stamford has an exclusively vegan menu, as per the Argo Lounge previously mentioned.
Menu | Address: The Old Delivery Office, Horseshoe Lane, Stamford PE9 2RB
Dog in a Doublet
This gastropub out in Thorney has a vegan night every Monday – although I can’t find the menu for it online. There are vegan options on the menu every other day of the week too. They also offer an 8 or 5 course tasting menu, which can be made vegan upon request beforehand.
Address: North Side, Thorney, Peterborough PE6 0RW

This is by all means not every single restaurant that serves vegan food in Peterborough – that list would be endless, which is really great! This is just a list of some of my favourite spots.
I shouldn’t speak too soon, but maybe the days are gone where we have to call beforehand to ask if we can be catered to – the vegan scene is really picking up in my city.
